Lila, a girl of about eight with tangled brown hair and bright, searching eyes, blinks sleepily at the ceiling. She stretches and sits up, noticing that her bedside lamp is flickering in colors she’s never seen before. As she reaches out, the lamp glows steadily, and she feels a warm tingling in her fingertips.
Lila sees a wilted flower drooping by the steps. She gently touches its petals, and with a soft shimmer, the flower stands upright, its colors more vivid than ever. "Did I do that?" she whispers, half in wonder and half in disbelief.
Lila concentrates on a fallen twig, imagining it floating in the air. Slowly, the twig rises, wobbles, then drops. Her heart pounds with excitement and fear. "If I can help the flower, maybe I can help other things too," she murmurs, determination lighting up her eyes.
Tommy, a shy classmate with oversized glasses, struggles to tie his shoelaces. Lila kneels beside him, placing her hand gently on his shoe. The laces twist and knot themselves perfectly. "How did you do that?" "Just lucky, I guess," she replies with a shy smile, her secret safe for now.
She mends a cracked birdbath with a touch, and helps a stray kitten find its way home by whispering comfort. Each act is small, but the warmth she feels grows with every kindness. "Maybe magic is meant to be shared," she thinks, watching the world become just a little bit brighter.
Lila gazes out the window, her heart full of hope and quiet pride. She knows her powers are a secret, but the joy of helping others makes her feel braver than ever. "Tomorrow, I’ll see what else I can do," she whispers to the night, already dreaming of wonders yet to come.
