Liam darted between the rocks, his arms outstretched as if he were an explorer in a faraway land. His friends chased after him, and together they leaped, shouted, and imagined great journeys beyond their little world. Each moment in the sun felt endless and brave.
Liam pulled his blanket up to his chin, his heart thumping in the silence. The bravery he felt during the day seemed to vanish with the sun, leaving uncertainty in its place. He whispered softly, "God, I’m scared."
Liam’s Mom, her voice quiet and soothing, reached out to him. "This light doesn’t make the dark disappear," she said, placing the star on the shelf, "but it reminds us we’re not alone." She opened a well-loved Bible and read, "When I am afraid, I put my trust in You." The gentle words wrapped around Liam like another blanket.
Liam gazed at the nightlight, feeling the shadows still lurking but noticing something new inside himself. He took a slow, deep breath and whispered, "I trust You, God." That night, wrapped in soft glow and newfound courage, he drifted peacefully to sleep.
Liam felt his heart race as shadows danced just beyond the firelight. He remembered the star-shaped nightlight, the words his mother had read, and the warmth of trust. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a tiny flashlight his dad had given him and clicked it on. "I trust You, God," he repeated, holding the beam steady even as the wind whispered through the trees.
Liam walked over, shining his flashlight so the shadows shrank away. "It’s okay," he said gently, "God is with us." The two children walked together back to their tents, the small beam of light leading the way, courage growing with each step.
Liam smiled at the little star, feeling the difference deep inside. The night still came, and the shadows still stretched, but now he knew he wasn’t alone. Courage, he realized, didn’t mean never being afraid—it meant trusting God, even when he was. And in that trust, he found a light that would never go out.
