Millie stretched lazily by the window, her eyes half-closed as she watched the familiar morning routine. Her companion, Oscar, sat beside her, his large eyes following the humans as they left.
"They left us," Oscar sighed dramatically, his tail flicking with irritation.
"They always leave us," Millie grumbled, looking longingly at the closed door. "I wish they could be home and cuddle with us..."
Oscar watched the dogs prance past with their owners, his heart sinking. "How do we even know they love us?" he wondered aloud.
Millie flicked her ear, her gaze following a squirrel scampering up a tree. "It's not fair," she muttered. "We're stuck in here. Left behind. Forgotten."
Millie and Oscar stewed in their resentment, their tails twitching in unison. Oscar paced back and forth, his mind churning with indignation.
"If they really loved us, they wouldn't leave us!" Oscar declared, his tail sweeping across the table and sending a vase crashing to the floor.
Millie's eyes widened in shock, then a mischievous glint appeared. "Well, this way they will for sure notice how upset they made us..."
Oscar and Millie hid in their chosen spots, stifling giggles as the humans entered the room.
"Millie? Oscar?" the humans called, their voices tinged with worry.
As they searched, Oscar couldn't hold back a sneeze. The humans spun around, relief washing over their faces as they spotted their mischievous pets.
Millie blinked, surprised by the gentle reprimand. "I guess they do love us," she murmured, nuzzling closer.
Oscar purred contentedly. "Even when we're bad."
Millie chuckled softly. "...Next time, maybe we destroy fewer plants?"
Oscar smirked, "Maybe."
Curled up in bed, Millie and Oscar purred in unison, their humans' presence a comforting reassurance. Love was always there, even when they couldn't see it.
