Eli ran his hand along the hutch, expecting to see the familiar twitching nose of his beloved bunny, Snowball, but the little creature was nowhere to be found. Panic began to rise as he checked under the bed, behind curtains, and in every shadowy nook his room offered. The soft chirping of birds outside seemed to mock his growing dread.
Mom stands by the stove, her brow furrowing as she sees Eli's worried face.
"Mom, Snowball is gone! I can't find her anywhere, not even in her favorite hiding spots,"
"Maybe she slipped out into the garden, sweetheart. Let’s look together—she couldn’t have gone far,"
The urgency in Eli's voice grows, determination hardening his features as he races toward the back door.
Eli searches behind the flowerpots, beneath the tool shed, and along the winding cobblestone path. Each rustle and flutter sets his heart leaping with hope, only to fall again when he finds nothing but shadows and insects. He pauses, eyes scanning the fence, noticing a small gap just wide enough for a bunny to squeeze through.
Eli squeezes through the fence, heart pounding as he calls out for Snowball. His shoes sink into soft earth as he follows faint paw prints, pushing aside ferns and ducking under low branches. The sounds of the world fade, replaced by the rustle of leaves and distant calls of birds.
Scout, the neighbor’s dog, bounds up with an eager bark, sniffing the ground.
"Hey, Scout! Have you seen Snowball?"
"Woof! Woof!" (Scout scampers ahead, glancing back as if to say, "Follow me!")
With renewed hope, Eli chases after Scout, the two weaving through brambles and over mossy logs.
Eli drops to his knees, arms outstretched, his voice shaking with emotion.
"Snowball! I was so worried about you! Let’s go home together,"
Scout circles them protectively, as Eli gently lifts Snowball into his arms. The journey back feels lighter, filled with laughter and gratitude, as the boy, his bunny, and their loyal friend return to the safety of home.
