Alone beneath the towering trees, a tiny yellow duckling shivered. The early sun barely pierced the thick canopy, painting the forest floor in dusky greens as he searched for warmth. His family was gone, their soft quacks fading into distant memory, leaving only silence and the hush of the river. He wandered near a patch of cool mud, peering through the ferns and calling out, but no one answered.
Night crept in, and the lost duckling struggled against hunger and fear. The woods were alive with unfamiliar sounds—hooting owls, snapping twigs, and the rustle of unseen creatures. Each step was heavy, his tiny feet raw from scrambling over rough bark and cold stones. He tucked himself beneath a fallen log, wishing for the soft warmth of his mother’s wing.
The next day, the duckling dragged himself to a shallow stream, his body weak with exhaustion. He dipped his beak in to drink, watching frightened as a pair of foxes darted by in the underbrush. He tried to paddle, but his energy was fading fast. Tears welled in his eyes, and he chirped softly, his voice barely more than a whisper in the vast, empty world.
A graceful mother duck with soft brown feathers watched from a distance, her heart aching with longing. She had always dreamed of raising ducklings but had never been able to lay eggs of her own. When she spotted the tiny duckling, trembling and alone, her instincts surged within her. "Little one, are you lost?" she called, her voice as warm as sunlight on water.
"I... I don't have a family anymore," the duckling stammered, his eyes wide and fearful. The mother duck lowered herself beside him, wrapping her wing around his small body. "You are safe now, little one. If you wish, I would be honored to be your mother," she said, her voice trembling with hope. The duckling nestled into her feathers, feeling warmth and belonging for the first time since he’d been abandoned.
From that day forward, the duckling and his new mother were inseparable. They explored the pond together, chased butterflies, and napped beneath the willows. Other animals watched as their bond grew stronger, the mother duck finally fulfilled and the duckling no longer alone. Together, they created a family bound not by blood, but by love and the promise of never being abandoned again.
