Max, a reserved fourth-grader with tousled brown hair and large, curious eyes, watched the other children from a distance. He longed to join them, to feel the camaraderie of shared laughter, but shyness held him back.
Max sighed, his sneakers scuffing the ground as he kicked a pebble. He glanced at the kickball game, wishing he had the courage to ask if he could join. "Maybe tomorrow," he whispered to himself, though he knew he'd said the same thing yesterday.
Everyone's attention shifted to the newcomer. The puppy yipped playfully, inviting anyone willing to join its impromptu game of chase. Max stood, intrigued by the unexpected visitor, his heart beating a little faster with excitement.
Liam, a friendly boy with a bright smile, noticed Max and waved him over. "Hey, want to help us catch him?" he called out.
"Sure!" Max replied, his voice tinged with newfound enthusiasm.
Sophia, a girl with a kind demeanor and quick reflexes, managed to coax the puppy into a gentle hold. "Got him!" she exclaimed, her eyes meeting Max's with a triumphant grin.
"We did it!" Max cheered, feeling a warm sense of belonging.
"See you tomorrow, Max?" Liam asked, giving him a friendly nudge.
"Definitely," Max replied, his heart full. He knew that making friends wasn't as scary as he'd thought.
