Owen, the self-appointed leader with thick glasses and an encyclopedic memory, is explaining the rules of their homemade board game. Max, always fiddling with his Rubik's cube, interrupts with a wild idea. Eli, Lucas, Benji, Sammy, and Julian listen, half-distracted by the drone of bees and the promise of snacks.
"What if we could just... transform? Like, one day we wake up and we're totally different—super strong, tough, even with long hair like those lumberjack guys on TV!"
Lucas tosses in a penny, squeezing his eyes shut. Benji follows, the rest crowding closer. The well seems to hum with possibility.
"Okay, everyone together. Wish hard!"
"I wish we could be a family of lumberjacks—strong, cool, and with the longest hair in school!"
A silvery mist slides across their rooms. Limbs stretch, hair grows, and pajamas strain at suddenly broad shoulders. As the clock strikes midnight, seven voices cry out in surprise, echoing through the stillness.
"Uh, guys? I think the wish worked... I can't even fit in my bed anymore!"
"Whoa, my hair is down to my elbows! And—wait, are these... axe calluses?"
"Okay, team—who can stack the biggest woodpile?"
"Bet I can braid my hair faster than you can chop that log!"
They cheer, high-five, and share stories, their nerdy personalities shining through their new burly forms.
"Maybe we didn't need a wish to be a family after all,"
"Yeah, but having super hair and muscles is pretty awesome,"
"As long as we're together, we can be anything."
They know that whatever tomorrow brings—be it math tests or lumberjack competitions—they'll face it as a family, long hair and all.
