Lila, a small and shy seven-year-old with raven hair tied into two neat braids, sat hunched over a tattered book. Her fingers traced the faded title, eyes filled with curiosity and a hint of trepidation. Nearby, Ms. Ellis, a warm and patient teacher with a kind smile, observed her with gentle encouragement.
"Lila, would you like to try reading the first sentence?" Ms. Ellis asked, her voice as soothing as the rustling leaves outside.
Lila hesitated, her small fingers gripping the book's edges. "I... I'm not sure," she whispered, glancing up with uncertain eyes.
"Just try, dear. Remember, every great reader started just like you," Ms. Ellis encouraged, her presence a calming anchor for Lila.
Lila nodded, taking a deep breath. Her eyes scanned the words, slowly forming sounds with her lips. "Once... upon... a time," she read, the words tentative but clear.
Lila began to immerse herself in the story, her voice gaining strength with each sentence. "In a faraway land, knights and dragons roamed," she read, her eyes wide with wonder.
Ms. Ellis watched with pride, her heart swelling at the sight of Lila's budding enthusiasm.
"You've done wonderfully, Lila," Ms. Ellis praised, placing a gentle hand on Lila's shoulder.
Lila beamed, the joy of her achievement shining in her eyes. "Thank you, Ms. Ellis. I didn't know I could do it," she replied, her voice filled with newfound confidence.
Lila lingered for a moment, her heart full of excitement for the stories she had yet to discover. With a final glance at Ms. Ellis, she whispered, "I can't wait to read more tomorrow," before skipping out into the evening air, a world of words now open to her.
