Cora stood at the edge of the playground, her gaze fixed on the bustling entrance of Willow Academy. Her fingers fiddled nervously with the strap of her backpack, the familiar twinge of anxiety clawing at her stomach. Today was another day to navigate the challenges of fifth grade, and her severe nut allergy, which often made her feel like an outsider.
Hazel, her best friend, joined her with a bright smile. "Ready for another day with the Moonbeams?" she asked, her enthusiasm infectious.
"As ready as I'll ever be," Cora replied, trying to match Hazel's optimism.
Palmer and Finley sat at their desks, waving Cora over to join them. Cora was grateful for their friendship, a beacon of support amidst the challenges she faced.
As the lesson began, Quinn, a notorious bully, whispered loud enough for Cora to hear, "Watch out, nut girl. Wouldn't want to accidentally bring something you're allergic to." The words stung, and Cora felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment.
"Ignore him, Cora. He's just being mean," Palmer reassured her.
Cora gathered with her friends, Hazel, Palmer, and Finley, around a table piled with books. The library was their refuge, a place where they could be themselves without judgment.
"Let's focus on the Moonbeam Festival. Remember, we're going to make it amazing," Finley said, his enthusiasm lifting Cora's spirits.
"Yeah, and we can make sure everything is safe for you, Cora," Hazel added, her voice full of determination.
With her friends by her side, Cora felt a surge of confidence as they helped prepare for the festival. Each streamer they hung felt like a step towards reclaiming her place among her peers.
"This is going to be the best festival ever," Cora said, her voice filled with hope.
"And it'll be safe for everyone," Palmer chimed in, sharing a knowing look with Cora.
Cora stood with her friends, watching the festivities unfold. The sense of belonging washed over her, stronger than the fear of her allergies. She realized that with the support of her friends, she could face any challenge.
"I'm glad I have you guys," Cora said, gratitude evident in her voice.
"We're always here for you, Cora," Hazel replied, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.
The Moonbeam Festival was a success, and so was Cora's journey to find her place at Willow Academy—nut allergy and all.
