Lila sat on the plush carpet, her tiny fingers playing with the edge of her favorite blanket. The afternoon sun streamed through the window, casting a warm glow on the room. Her parents sat across from her, exchanging excited glances. "You're going to be a big sister, Lila," her mother announced, her voice filled with joy. Lila's heart skipped a beat. She wasn't sure what being a big sister meant, but it sounded important.
The weeks passed, and the nursery began to take shape. Plush animals lined the shelves, and a crib stood ready by the window. Lila watched as her parents painted the walls a soft sky blue. "Will he like it, Mama?" she asked, her voice tinged with curiosity and a touch of worry. Her mother smiled, brushing a stray curl from Lila's forehead. "He'll love it. And he'll love having you as his sister," her mother reassured her.
The day finally arrived when Max was born. Lila stood by the hospital bed, eyes wide as she gazed at the tiny bundle in her mother's arms. Max yawned, his small face scrunching up in a way that made Lila giggle. "He's so tiny, Mama," she whispered, reaching out to touch his soft cheek. Her father chuckled, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "You'll be his big sister, his guide," he said.
The first night at home with Max was a new adventure. Lila watched as her mother rocked him gently, singing a lullaby. She wanted to help, to be part of this new world. Her mother noticed and beckoned her over. "Would you like to sing to him, Lila?" she asked. Lila nodded, her heart swelling with a mix of pride and nervousness. She sang softly, her voice mingling with her mother's, and Max settled into a peaceful sleep.
Days turned into weeks, and Lila found herself slipping into her role as a big sister with ease. She learned that Max loved it when she showed him her colorful storybooks, his eyes following the pictures with delight. "Look, Max! This is the dragon," she'd exclaim, watching his tiny hands wave in excitement. Her mother often watched from the doorway, her heart full of pride.
One quiet evening, Lila sat by the window with Max nestled in her arms, the room bathed in the warm hues of sunset. She marveled at how much had changed and how much she had come to love her little brother. "I think we're going to be the best of friends, Max," she whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to his forehead. Max cooed in response, and in that moment, Lila knew that being a big sister was indeed a special responsibility, one she was ready to embrace with all her heart.
