Oliver stood at the edge of the room, his small fingers nervously clutching his backpack straps. He took a deep breath, feeling the slight tug of the G-tube beneath his shirt—a constant reminder of his uniqueness.
"I can do this," he whispered to himself, stepping forward into the bustling sea of new faces.
Oliver shuffled to the front, clutching a small box filled with his beloved dinosaur toys. His heart raced as he faced his classmates, their curious eyes upon him.
"Hi, I'm Oliver," he began, his voice wavering slightly. "These are my dinosaurs. This is a T-Rex, and this one is a Triceratops. They're my favorites!"
"I love dinosaurs too!" Maya exclaimed, her enthusiasm breaking the ice. Ethan, a boy with tousled hair and an adventurous spirit, nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, they're awesome! Do you have a Stegosaurus?" he asked, his eyes sparkling with interest.
Oliver grinned, feeling a warmth spread through him that had nothing to do with the sun. "I do! It's right here," he said, holding up the toy.
Maya and Ethan walked alongside Oliver, their conversation an easy flow of dinosaur facts and favorite games.
"Do you want to play tag with us?" Maya asked, her voice hopeful.
"Sure!" Oliver replied, his heart lighter than it had been in a long time.
Oliver paused to catch his breath, the G-tube no longer a source of anxiety, but a part of him that his new friends accepted without question.
"You're really fast, Oliver!" Ethan laughed, tagging him lightly on the shoulder.
"Thanks," Oliver beamed, feeling truly seen and accepted for the first time.
Oliver waved goodbye to Maya and Ethan, his heart full of hope and excitement for the days to come.
Walking home, he felt a newfound sense of belonging, knowing that he had finally found friends who saw him for who he truly was—dinosaurs, G-tube, and all.
