Lila and Max sat in the back seat of the car, peering out at the unfamiliar landscape. Their mother had explained that they would be staying with their grandparents for a while, but the reality of it only began to sink in when they saw the cottage. "Do you think they'll be nice?" Lila asked, her voice tinged with nervousness.
"I hope so," Max replied, clutching his favorite stuffed dinosaur tightly.
Grandpa Joe, a tall, kind-eyed man with silver hair, stood at the door. "Welcome, welcome!" he exclaimed, his arms open wide. Behind him, Grandma Ruth, with her apron dusted in flour, smiled warmly. "We've been waiting for you two," she said, ushering them inside.
The smell of freshly baked cookies wafted through the air, instantly making the children feel at home. Max's eyes lit up as he eyed the plate of treats on the kitchen table.
Lila and Max sat on the plush carpet, looking at the photographs of their mother as a child. "She looks so happy," Lila murmured, tracing her finger over a picture.
"She had many happy moments here," Grandpa Joe said, settling into his armchair. Grandma Ruth joined them, handing each child a cookie.
"And you will too," she promised, her voice gentle yet firm.
Max peeked into the attic space, his curiosity piqued. Lila followed him, their footsteps echoing softly on the wooden floorboards. They uncovered old toys and books, each item a piece of their mother's past. "It's like a whole other world up here," Lila marveled.
"I think we'll like it here," Max declared, his earlier apprehensions dissipating like the clouds outside.
"The trick is to mix with love," Grandma Ruth said, guiding Max's small hands on the mixing spoon. Lila giggled as she tried to keep up, her cheeks rosy from the heat of the oven and the joy of the moment.
Grandpa Joe popped his head in, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Who's ready for a story after dinner?" he asked.
"We are!" Max and Lila chorused, their voices full of excitement.
Lila whispered into the quiet, "I think things will be okay here, Max."
Max nodded sleepily, "Yeah, I think so too," he replied, comforted by the thought.
With the promise of new adventures and a loving home, they drifted into a peaceful sleep, their hearts lighter and their future brighter.
