Liam stood at the edge of the schoolyard, his backpack slightly askew and his gaze fixed on the bustling scene before him. He felt a fluttering in his stomach as he watched the other kids. Today was his first day, and everything felt both exciting and overwhelming.
"I can do this," he whispered to himself, taking a deep breath.
Mr. Thompson, their teacher, smiled warmly. "Class, this is Liam. Let's make him feel welcome," he said, gesturing for Liam to take a seat.
Maya, a friendly girl with curly hair and a bright smile, caught Liam's eye and waved him over to an empty desk next to her.
"Hi, Liam. I'm Maya. If you need any help, just let me know," she offered kindly.
As the game progressed, Liam found himself struggling to keep up. The other players moved swiftly, and when the ball was taken from him, a wave of frustration surged through him.
"No, no, no!" he cried out, his voice rising as tears welled up in his eyes.
Maya, noticing his distress, jogged over. "Hey, it's okay, Liam. We all have off days," she said gently.
Maya, sitting beside Liam, spoke to the group. "Let's talk about how we can be better teammates. Sometimes, it's not just about winning," she suggested.
Mr. Thompson joined them, nodding in agreement. "Perhaps we can learn more about each other and what makes us unique," he proposed.
Maya led the project, encouraging everyone to create posters about empathy and understanding. Liam worked diligently, drawing pictures of people helping each other.
"Sometimes, I just feel so much at once," he shared with Maya, who listened attentively.
"And that's okay, Liam. We're here to help," she reassured him with a smile.
Liam walked alongside Maya, feeling a newfound sense of belonging.
"Thanks for being my friend, Maya. I think I'm going to like it here," he said, a smile spreading across his face.
"Anytime, Liam. Let's make this year great," she replied, her eyes bright with the promise of new adventures together.
