Little Bill adjusts his blue cap nervously, glancing at the shadows around him.
Geo Umizoomi, with his green suit gleaming under the porch lights, fidgets with his backpack.
April Glover tugs her red sweater close, her eyes wide and excited.
"Are you sure the old house on Maple Street isn't haunted?"
"We promised we'd check it out together! It's just stories, right?"
"Let's stick together. If we get scared, we'll run back home!"
As they step over the threshold, a sudden chill sweeps through the hallway, making their hair stand on end. Suddenly, three translucent shapes dart from the staircase, swirling in the dim light. The children freeze as ghostly moans echo through the house, shadows twisting on the walls.
"Did you see that? Ghosts! Real ghosts!"
"Run! Run for your life!"
"I'm so scared—go, go!"
Their footsteps echo in the night as fear propels them forward. Behind them, the eerie moans fade, replaced by the comforting hum of distant cars. They don't stop until they reach their own front doors, hearts pounding.
"Mom! Mom! There were ghosts in the old house!"
"We saw three of them—please help us!"
"I never want to go back there! Ever!"
Mrs. Bill, gentle and caring, kneels beside her son, smoothing his hair.
Geo's Mom, practical and kind, hugs him tight.
April's Mom, softly spoken, takes April's trembling hands in hers.
"You’re safe now. Tell us what happened, sweetheart."
"Ghosts, you say? Hmm, let’s think this through together."
"Why don’t you all sit down and we’ll figure it out as a team."
Suddenly, laughter erupts from the hallway. The mothers reveal a secret: earlier that evening, Mrs. Carter, Mr. Lee, and Mrs. Perez—neighbors who love a good Halloween prank—had dressed as ghosts to spook the bravest trick-or-treaters.
"It was just Mrs. Carter, Mr. Lee, and Mrs. Perez playing tricks!"
"They wanted to give you a scare, but you all did the right thing coming home."
"Next time, we’ll go as a group—and maybe play a prank on them instead!"
"I can’t believe we fell for it!"
"Next year, let’s be the ghosts!"
"Best Halloween ever—even if it was scary!"
Outside, the moon shines bright, and in the safety of home, nothing seems quite so frightening after all.
