Luna Blackwood, a pale girl dressed in a velvet-black dress with white lace cuffs, clutches a tattered sketchbook to her chest. Her dark hair falls in sharp waves, eyes ringed with kohl, giving her a mysterious, gothic look that draws curious—and sometimes wary—glances. As she steps forward, the laughter momentarily hushes, replaced by whispers and speculative stares.
A group of classmates cluster by the lockers. Olivia Harper, the outgoing class president with a sunny smile, leans in for a closer look at the new arrival. "Hey, you must be Luna, right? I love your dress—very... unique!" Luna hesitates, searching for a safe reply. "Thanks. My grandmother made it. She says black never goes out of style."
Nearby, Ethan Miller, a shy boy with tousled hair and an interest in comics, watches her with intrigue. He nudges his friend. "She’s drawing the crows outside. That’s kind of cool, don’t you think?" The friend just shrugs. Luna glances up, catching Ethan’s gaze, then quickly returns to her sketch.
Olivia approaches, her sneakers crunching on the gravel. "You know, people might be less weird if you talked to them first," she says, her tone gentle. "It’s not easy," Luna admits, voice barely above a whisper. "I’ve always felt like a ghost in places like this. Do you ever feel that way?" Olivia nods, surprising Luna. "Everyone has their own kind of weird. I think that’s what makes us interesting."
Ethan waves her over, a tentative smile on his face. "Want to help with the haunted house backdrop? I heard you’re good at drawing spooky stuff." Luna’s eyes light up, and she slips into the seat beside him. For the first time, her smile is genuine. "I’d love to. Maybe we can make it the spookiest ever."
She pauses beneath a streetlamp, watching a trio of crows settle on the playground swing. Around her, the little town feels just a bit less lonely. Luna realizes that, even in a world of bright colors and loud laughter, there’s room for a little darkness—and maybe, just maybe, for her.
