Nick sits on the edge of his bed, nervously twisting a Digimon card between his fingers. He glances at his backpack, already packed with Pokémon and Digimon cards, as if hoping they’ll give him courage for today’s playdate with Matt. Thoughts swirl in his mind about being the older kid, uncertain about spending time with someone much younger.
"Why does Matt have to be a baby? I wish I didn’t have to go," Nick mutters under his breath, imagining all the ways he might get out of it. But his mom’s voice, gentle yet firm, echoes from the hallway, reminding him he’s expected.
Matt, smaller and round-cheeked, waits with wide eyes, clutching a Pikachu plush. He looks up as Nick enters, unsure whether to smile or hide. Nick hesitates at the doorway, scanning the room, surprised by the familiar cards stacked beside Matt.
"I didn’t know you were still into those," Matt says, his voice tentative, expecting Nick to laugh. Nick grins, relieved to find common ground.
"If you want, I brought mine too. We can trade," he replies, holding up his own deck. Matt’s eyes widen in surprise and excitement.
The tension melts away as Nick and Matt duel, their hands moving quickly, voices growing louder with each victorious shout. Matt’s mom pops in occasionally, her face warm and encouraging. The two boys lose track of time, their initial awkwardness replaced by genuine enjoyment.
"You’re really good at this, Nick! Want to trade your Agumon for my Blastoise?" Matt asks, hope shining in his eyes.
"Deal! But only if you promise not to beat me with it," Nick laughs, and they shake on it.
Matt’s mom offers Nick the chance to spend the night. Nick hesitates, cheeks flushing as he admits he’s a bedwetter, feeling exposed. Matt, unbothered, smiles and offers one of his own diapers.
"It’s okay, Nick. You can use one of mine," Matt says, his voice gentle.
"You know what… yes. I’d like to stay," Nick replies, relief mixing with nervousness. Matt’s mom gently changes both boys, Nick choosing his old-fashioned button-down pajamas with a sheepish grin.
Matt glances at Nick’s pajamas, curious.
"Nobody wears those old pj’s anymore," he teases, but Nick just shrugs, relaxed for the first time all day.
"I like them. They remind me of my grandpa," Nick replies, smiling. Halfway through the movie, both boys drift off, content in each other’s company.
He nudges Matt awake, excitement bubbling in his chest.
"Hey, it’s my birthday party next month. Do you want to come?" Nick asks, hope in his voice.
"Yes!" Matt grins, his happiness clear. For the first time, both boys feel the thrill of a new friendship, unburdened by differences or worries.
