Sam, a wild-haired boy with dirt-smudged knees, stands at the edge of the potato field, scanning the horizon with anxious eyes. His hands cup around his mouth as he calls out for his missing companion.
"Bobby! Bobby, where are you? Come on, boy!"
Each call echoes down the hill, but only the rustle of potato leaves answers him.
Emily, her ponytail catching the sunlight, approaches with curiosity. She notices Sam's worried face and the frantic way he searches among the potato plants. Hesitating only a moment, she steps closer, her boots crunching softly on the dry soil.
"Hey, are you looking for something? Or maybe...someone?"
"Yeah! My dog, Bobby. He ran off chasing a rabbit, I think. Have you seen him?"
"I haven't, but I'd love to help you look. Two pairs of eyes are always better than one!"
Emily points out small paw prints in the soft earth, her sharp eyes picking up clues Sam missed. They follow the trail, ducking under a scarecrow’s outstretched arms and weaving between rows heavy with blossoms.
"You’re really good at this, Emily. I thought I’d be searching alone all day."
"That’s what friends are for. Even if we just met, right?"
A gentle breeze stirs, carrying the distant sound of barking.
Bobby, a scruffy dog with bright eyes and a wagging tail, is tangled in a patch of blackberry vines, whining softly. Sam sprints over, careful not to trip on the uneven ground, and kneels beside his friend.
"Bobby! Hold on, I’m here. Emily, can you help me get these branches off him?"
"Of course! Careful—those thorns are sharp," she says, gently pulling the vines away.
Sam[/@ch_1] and Emily free Bobby. The dog leaps into Sam's arms, tail wagging furiously, and licks his face with relief. The sun begins to dip behind the hill, painting the clouds in shades of pink and lavender.]
Sam laughs, hugging Bobby tight. Emily grins, her cheeks flushed with pride and happiness.
"Thank you, Emily. I couldn't have done it without you,"
"Any time, Sam. Besides, it was kind of an adventure!"
They sit together for a moment, watching the lights of the village flicker on below.
Bobby[/@ch_3] bounding ahead, his bark echoing joyfully. Fireflies begin to appear, dotting the air with tiny sparks of light, while the potato field fades into shadow.]
Emily promises to visit the hill again, and Sam agrees, grateful for his new friend. Their laughter drifts through the evening air, mingling with the sounds of home and newfound friendship.
"Next time, maybe Bobby can teach us both how to track rabbits,"
"Only if you promise not to get stuck in the brambles!"
The village below welcomes them back, the day’s worries forgotten in the warmth of their adventure.
