Benny the Rabbit stretched his long ears as he emerged from his cozy straw bed. The barn cat lounged nearby, lazily swishing its tail, while roosters crowed from the chicken coop. The air was filled with the earthy scent of hay and the distant laughter of children.
Mr. Thompson, the farmer, sat at the head of the table, sipping coffee. His wife, Mrs. Thompson, busied herself with a skillet, while their daughters, Emily and Sophie, chattered excitedly about the day ahead. "Can we play with Benny after breakfast, Papa?"
"Of course, girls. Just remember to check his water bowl," he replied, his eyes twinkling.
"Benny, want to see who can hop the farthest?" Sophie challenged, crouching beside the little rabbit. Benny twitched his nose, then bounded forward, his white fur flashing in the sun. Emily clapped her hands, cheering them both on.
Mrs. Thompson appeared at the porch, her voice urgent. "Girls, come inside! The storm’s coming fast!" Emily scooped up Benny, cradling him close as fat raindrops began to fall. Lightning flashed, illuminating the farmhouse as everyone hurried indoors.
Benny nestled in Sophie's lap, feeling safe and content. Mr. Thompson read a story aloud, his voice soothing above the storm. "I'm glad Benny is with us," Emily whispered, sharing a smile with her sister.
Mrs. Thompson tucked the girls into bed, kissing their foreheads. Benny returned to his hutch, the straw warm beneath him, as crickets began to sing. All was calm again on Maplewood Farm, where a little rabbit was truly one of the family.
