Prince Max sits on his velvet-cushioned window seat, tears tracing lines down his cheeks as he hugs a small wooden horse. The birthday crown lies forgotten beside him, its gold glinting in the sun. Queen Eleanor enters quietly, her footsteps muffled by the lush carpet, concern etched on her regal face.
"Max, my darling, what troubles you on this special day?"
"I’m a sad little prince, Mama, because Papa isn’t here. I miss him so much,"
Queen Eleanor kneels beside Max, gently brushing his hair away from his eyes. She draws him closer, her embrace enveloping him in maternal warmth. A gentle breeze stirs the curtains, carrying the scent of blooming roses from the palace gardens.
"Your father loves you dearly, Max. He wishes he could be here, but his duties to France are important. Today is still your day, and we will celebrate together,"
"Will he remember my birthday?"
"Always, my sweet prince. Let’s make some happy memories for when he returns,"
Queen Eleanor selects a splendid uniform, helping Max into the crisp jacket and straightening his sash. The little prince’s eyes, though still damp, begin to sparkle at the sight of his reflection. She pins a jeweled brooch to his chest, the symbol of his courage.
"Look at you, Max. So brave, so handsome. The kingdom awaits its joyful prince,"
"Do you think everyone will notice if I try to smile?"
"They will see your heart shining, love,"
Max, dressed in his royal best, enters escorted by Queen Eleanor. Nobles and servants alike cheer, their voices echoing through the stone walls. The scent of honey cakes and fresh bread fills the air, and minstrels strike up a lively tune.
"Thank you for coming to my party," he says, his voice small but steady, as he greets his guests. Queen Eleanor beams with pride, watching her son begin to rediscover his joy.
Max blows out his candles, closing his eyes to make a wish. He imagines his father’s return, the family reunited and smiling together. Queen Eleanor squeezes his hand, whispering her love and encouragement.
"I wished for Papa to come home soon,"
"I know he will, Max. Until then, you are never alone. You are surrounded by love,"
Max, now smiling, chases after his friends beneath the twinkling lights. Queen Eleanor watches from a nearby bench, her heart full of hope for her son. The party continues into the night, and though Max's wish is yet to be fulfilled, he feels like a happy little prince once more.
