Maya pokes at her toast, glancing at her little sister. Leila hums to herself, her eyes bright with excitement. "Do you think we’ll see the camels again on the way to school?""Maybe! But I hope we will have time to play on the playground before class," Leila replies, grinning.
"Girls, I have something important to tell you," Malti begins softly. Maya looks up, curious, while Leila stops humming. "Your dad’s job is moving us to a new part of Dubai. You’ll be starting at a different school next month,""A new school? But I love my teacher and my friends!" Leila says, her smile fading. "Will we have to say goodbye to everyone?" Maya asks, her voice small.
"What if I don’t make any friends at the new school?" Maya wonders aloud, her voice trembling. "What if the teachers are strict and the playground isn’t fun?" Leila asks, her shoulders drooping. "Maybe... maybe we could build a sandcastle today. It always makes me feel better," Maya suggests hopefully.
"Let’s make a big gate for new friends to come in," Leila says, carefully carving an archway. "And a tall tower so we can see all the new things from up high," Maya adds, patting the sand smooth. As they work, their worries begin to fade, replaced by hope.
"Our castle is different from any we’ve built before," Leila says softly. "Yeah, but I think I like it. It’s special because we made it together, just like we’ll try new things together," Maya replies. "Change isn’t so scary if we have each other," Leila says, hugging her sister.
"Let’s build new memories, just like we built our sandcastle," Maya whispers. "Together," Leila agrees, smiling as they step through the school gates, ready for their new adventure.
