Norrie, a vibrant black boy with a curious mind, sat at his desk, observing the room with keen eyes. Across from him sat James, a quiet white boy with tousled hair, who seemed a little withdrawn. Norrie noticed the differences between them—the newness of his own clothes compared to James's well-worn attire. "Do you want to play with me during recess?"
Norrie and James sit on the swings, their feet kicking up dust as they talk. Despite James's initial shyness, Norrie's warmth begins to bring out his smiles. "I've never had a friend like you before," James admits, his eyes brightening. "That's why we're school brothers now," Norrie replies with a grin.
Norrie opens his lunchbox, revealing two neatly packed snacks, each with a name written in bright marker. James, sitting next to him, looks surprised. "My mom packed one for you too," Norrie explains, handing over the snack with James's name on it. "Thank you," James says softly, a shy smile spreading across his face.
Norrie and James work side by side, sharing a box of crayons. Other children start to notice their friendship and begin to include James in their games. "It's fun having more friends," James says, his voice filled with newfound confidence.
Norrie talks about his family, and James listens intently, feeling included and understood. "I like being your brother," James says, his eyes reflecting gratitude and joy. "Me too," Norrie replies, offering a fist bump.
Norrie and James walk side by side, their backpacks bouncing lightly. The bond they've formed is visible in their shared laughter and easy camaraderie. "See you tomorrow, brother," Norrie calls as they part ways, with James waving back with a smile that reaches his eyes.
