Eli, a slender twelve-year-old boy with messy brown hair and oversized glasses, sits on the edge of his bed, quietly tying his shoelaces. The air is heavy with the silence of early morning, broken only by muffled laughter and footsteps from the hallway. His face is tense, eyes downcast, as he prepares himself for another day of enduring the taunts of his older siblings.
Max, Eli’s older brother, towers near the fridge, tossing a balled-up napkin at him. Sophie, his sister, smirks, arms crossed. "Hey, Eli, are you going to cry over your soggy toast today, or are you saving it for school?" "Careful, Max, he might disappear if we look away. He’s basically invisible already," Eli flinches, clutching his backpack tighter, but says nothing, slipping quietly past them toward the door.
Jake, a classmate, sticks out a foot, making Eli stumble. "Oops, sorry, didn’t see you there, Eli the Ghost!" A few others snicker, their eyes sliding past him as if he truly were invisible. Eli brushes himself off and keeps walking, his cheeks burning with embarrassment, wishing desperately for a friend to stand with him.
Eli glances around, making sure no one is watching, then ducks behind a dumpster. He takes a deep breath, and his timid expression hardens with determination. With a flicker of blue light, he transforms—his posture straightens, glasses vanish, and a sleek mask covers his face. "Don’t worry. I’m here to help," he whispers, leaping into action with superhuman speed, rescuing a stranded kitten from a ledge and comforting the crying child.
As he sits alone, a gentle voice interrupts his thoughts. Maya, a girl from his class with bright eyes and a kind smile, sits beside him. "I saw what you did for that little kid today. That was really brave, Eli. You know, you don’t have to be alone all the time," Eli’s heart lifts, hope flickering in his eyes as he offers a shy smile in return.
Eli stands by the window, gazing out at the glowing city and the twinkling stars above. "Maybe tomorrow will be different," he whispers, hope warming his voice as he imagines a future filled with friendship and the courage to be himself—both in secret and in the light.
