The four siblings stood on the platform, their small suitcases clutched tightly. Peter, the eldest, kept his gaze steady, trying to be brave for his younger siblings. Anna, her eyes misty, held John's hand, while Madeline, the youngest, fidgeted with the hem of her dress. Their father, a soldier in the British Army, saluted them with pride, while their mother waved a handkerchief, tears glistening in her eyes.
"We'll be back before you know it," Anna whispered, though she wasn’t sure who she was trying to comfort more—her parents or herself.
The children stepped off the train, their eyes wide with awe and a hint of trepidation. Lady Bird Anne, a woman with a stern expression and a sharp gaze, waited for them at the edge of the platform. Her presence was as commanding as the mansion she resided in.
"Welcome to your new home," she announced, her voice clipped but not unkind.
Peter led the way, his curiosity piqued by the grandeur and mystery of the mansion. John and Anna followed closely, whispering about the stories the old walls might tell. Madeline, however, was drawn to a peculiar door at the end of a long hallway.
"I wonder what's in there," she mused, her eyes alight with mischief.
Madeline had slipped away from her siblings, enticed by the mystery of the closet. Inside, she found herself in a snowy forest, where the trees sparkled as if dusted with diamonds. It was there she met James, an old dwarf with a beard as white as the snow around them.
"Welcome, young one," James greeted, his voice warm and inviting despite the cold.
Anna rushed forward, enveloping Madeline in a fierce hug. Peter and John exchanged looks of relief and mild exasperation.
"Promise you won't wander off again," Anna implored, her voice tinged with lingering anxiety.
"Promise," Madeline replied earnestly, her adventure still twinkling in her eyes.
Lady Bird Anne observed them from a distance, her stern expression softened by a hint of a smile. The children, though far from home, had found a sense of belonging amidst the chaos of war.
"We'll be alright," Peter said, watching his siblings with pride.
"Indeed, you will," Lady Bird Anne agreed, her voice gentle in the twilight.
