Dad leaned forward, a twinkle in his eye. "Did you know that you have a superpower?"
Lily's eyes widened with excitement. "A superpower? Like flying or talking to animals?"
"Even better," Dad replied. "It's called mindfulness."
Dad continued, "Your mind is like a bunch of monkeys swinging from tree to tree. Mindfulness helps calm those monkeys down."
Lily giggled, picturing the monkeys.
"Close your eyes and listen," Dad instructed. Lily heard the ticking clock, chirping birds, and even her own breath.
"Let's practice with the Breath Balloon," Dad suggested. Lily imagined a balloon in her belly, breathing in to fill it and out to let it shrink.
"The monkeys are quieter!" Lily exclaimed.
"Whenever you're nervous or upset, remember your Breath Balloon," Dad advised.
"Let's play the Giggle Game," Lily suggested. Max nodded eagerly.
Both breathed in, out, trying not to laugh, but they burst into giggles after a few seconds.
"Mindfulness is fun!" Max declared.
Lily, lost in thought, remembered mindfulness. She took a slow bite of her cake, savoring the sweet vanilla flavor.
"Yum!" Lily exclaimed.
Mom, smiling, added, "Mindfulness helps us enjoy food more."
Feeling a surge of frustration, Lily whispered, "Mindful monkeys, help me out."
She closed her eyes, imagining the Breath Balloon, and slowly, her anger faded.
"I did it!" she cheered quietly.
"Mindfulness helps us enjoy good times and handle tricky ones," Lily explained, drawing a peaceful tree.
"And the best part?" Max asked.
"You can use it forever," Lily said, smiling. They set off for their next mindful adventure, their laughter echoing through the house.
