Eli, a simple boy with gentle eyes and messy brown hair, tries to keep to himself as a group of kids play nearby. Suddenly, Jake, a boy known for his loud voice and teasing ways, approaches with a smirk. "Why do you always look so lost, Eli? Are you too scared to play with us?" The taunts sting, and Eli blinks back tears, feeling smaller with every word.
Eli bursts through the door, his cheeks streaked with tears. He drops his backpack and runs into the comforting arms of Mom, who kneels to meet him at eye level. "Oh, sweetheart, come here. Tell me what happened." As he sobs out the story, Mom holds him close, her hands gentle and strong.
Mom smooths Eli's hair, her voice a soothing whisper. "Eli, I want to tell you a secret. No matter what anyone says, remember that Jesus loves you—and He loves everyone, even those who hurt us. Sometimes, all someone needs is a little kindness." Eli's eyes widen, hope flickering in his heart as he hugs his mother tightly.
Eli takes a deep breath, repeating his mother’s words silently. Jake spots him and starts to swagger over, a familiar glint in his eye. Mom holds her breath, hands pressed to her chest, ready to step in if needed.
"Here comes scaredy-cat Eli again. Gonna cry today too?" Instead of shrinking away, Eli looks up and smiles, his eyes shining with new courage. "Jesus loves you, Jake," he says softly, and the words hang in the air, unexpected and gentle. Jake blinks in surprise, the teasing caught in his throat, and for the first time, he doesn’t have a reply.
Eli walks to his classroom, his steps surer than before. Mom waves and whispers a silent prayer of thanks. Eli knows now that kindness is stronger than teasing, and sometimes a gentle word is all it takes to change a heart. [Moral of the Story: True strength is not in fighting back, but in showing kindness and love, even to those who hurt us.]
