The selfish crocodile lay on the riverbank, basking in the warmth of the morning sun. His scales glistened like emeralds, and his eyes were half-closed in contentment. Despite the beauty surrounding him, his heart was cold and unkind. He had claimed the river as his own, snapping and snarling at any creature that dared to approach.
A tiny mouse, brave but cautious, emerged from the undergrowth, his whiskers twitching with curiosity. He was thirsty, and the river’s edge promised relief. "I must drink," he murmured to himself, eyeing the formidable crocodile. The crocodile noticed the mouse and bared his teeth, a low growl rumbling from his throat.
The mouse gathered his courage and approached the crocodile, speaking with a voice as steady as he could muster. "Please, sir, may I have a sip of water? I promise I won't take much." The crocodile, amused by the mouse's audacity, chuckled deeply. "Why should I share my river with you?" he sneered, his eyes gleaming with mischief.
The mouse, undeterred, replied, "Because, dear crocodile, kindness is never wasted. Perhaps one day, you might need a friend too." The crocodile paused, the mouse's words echoing in his mind. Reluctantly, he shifted aside, allowing the mouse to drink.
The crocodile, watching the grateful mouse scamper away, felt a warmth he had never known before. The river, once his alone, now felt more alive, filled with the laughter and chatter of other creatures daring to approach for the first time. He realized that sharing his space brought him unexpected joy, and a small smile spread across his face as he settled back into the riverbank, content at last.
