Brooke sat on her bed, surrounded by her collection of peculiar treasures—an old compass, a chipped teacup, and a feather from a bird she'd never seen. "I don't know if I can do this, Mom," she confessed, her voice a whisper of uncertainty.
Mom knelt beside her, a reassuring smile on her face. "You'll be okay, Brooke. Rebecca's house is just next door, and you can always call me if you need to," she said, smoothing down Brooke's hair.
Brooke took a deep breath, clutching her favorite stuffed animal tightly. "Okay, I'm ready," she declared, though her heart fluttered like a trapped butterfly.
"Remember, thumb in your pocket if you feel anxious," Mom advised, giving Brooke a final hug.
Rebecca, a lively girl with a mischievous grin, welcomed Brooke with open arms. "Come on, let's build a pillow fort!" she exclaimed, already pulling cushions from the sofa.
Brooke smiled shyly, feeling the knot in her stomach loosen slightly. "That sounds fun," she replied, her thumb safely tucked away in her pocket.
Inside the fort, Brooke and Rebecca told stories, their voices hushed conspiratorially. "Have you ever heard of the midnight monster?" Rebecca asked, her eyes wide with feigned fear.
Brooke giggled, feeling the camaraderie of shared secrets. "Only if you count my little brother," she joked, finally allowing herself to relax.
Brooke lay awake, staring at the ceiling of their makeshift fort. Her thumb edged closer to her mouth, but she caught herself, recalling her mom's advice.
"Hey, are you still awake?" Rebecca whispered, breaking the silence.
"Yeah," Brooke replied, feeling a wave of relief wash over her as she realized she wasn't alone.
Brooke woke up to the sound of birds chirping and the smell of pancakes wafting through the air. Rebecca was already up, bouncing with excitement. "Let's have breakfast!" she suggested.
Brooke nodded, feeling a sense of accomplishment. She had faced her fears and discovered the magic of friendship along the way. "I can't wait," she said, stepping into the new day with confidence.
