Mrs. Cromart, her silver hair plastered to her cheeks, grips a wooden shutter with numb fingers as she tries to secure her bakery. Beside her, Mayor O'Mally, a stout man with a rain-soaked coat and a determined frown, strains against the wind to drive the latch home. "Hold it steady, O'Mally, or this wind will take it right out of our hands!" "I'm doing my best, Mrs. Cromart! Just one more bolt—" The two struggle together, every movement a battle against the raging elements.
Finn, a boy of eight with tousled brown hair, leans forward, his breath fogging the glass as he scans the harbor. Lila, his older sister, watches him just as much as she watches the storm, noticing his clenched fists and the flicker of fear mixed with determination in his eyes. "Look, Lila, the dolphin—we have to help him!" "Finn, it's too dangerous. But..." She hesitates, torn between fear and her brother's urgent hope.
Lila's heart pounds in her chest as she glances back toward the closed door of their parents’ room. Finn grips her hand tightly, his jaw set. "We'll be quick," she whispers, mostly to herself, as they step into the wild night.
Finn and Lila fight their way across the pier, ducking flying branches and skidding on slippery planks. "Hang on, we’re here to help!" Lila kneels beside the dolphin, her hands trembling as she works to free the net from its fin. Together, with gritted teeth and desperate prayers, the children manage to untangle the exhausted creature.
Finn watches, awe-struck, as the dolphin gives a soft, grateful click before a wave lifts it back into the churning sea. Lila feels an odd tingling in her fingers, and a strange understanding settles in her mind. "Did you...did you feel that, Finn?" "Yeah. I think...I think he said thank you."
A small crab scuttles across their path, chittering anxiously. To their astonishment, its words ring clear in their minds. "He says the tide brought in something strange last night, and that our bravery and kindness to animals was rewarded by the dolphin who gave us the ability to understand everything they say?" Lila murmurs, eyes wide. The children exchange amazed, delighted glances, sensing that their lives in Misty Cove are about to become far more magical—and that their new gift will be the key to many adventures yet to come.
