Ethan sat on the porch steps, his eyes scanning the street for any sign of Lila. The air was filled with the scent of fresh-cut grass and blooming flowers, a perfect Saturday afternoon. He recalled the days in kindergarten when he would carry Lila on piggyback rides, her laughter infectious and bright.
Lila finally came into view, her energy as contagious as ever. "Hey, Ethan! Guess what?" she called out, her voice ringing with joy.
Ethan grinned, standing up to greet her. "What is it, Lila?" he asked, curiosity piqued.
As soon as Lila reached him, without a moment's hesitation, she bent down and hoisted Ethan up onto her back. "See? I'm strong too!" she declared, her determination matched only by the wide smile on her face.
Ethan laughed, feeling a mix of surprise and admiration. "Okay, okay, you win!" he exclaimed, holding on as she carried him into the living room.
When they reached the living room, Lila set him down gently, only to quickly pick him up again, this time for a piggyback ride. She laughed as she made her way to the kitchen, "I told you I've been practicing!"
Ethan chuckled, enjoying the ride. "You're amazing, Lila," he said, admiration evident in his voice.
Lila finally set Ethan down, both of them slightly out of breath but beaming with happiness. They flopped onto the couch, their laughter filling the room.
"Remember when you used to carry me around? I wanted to show you I could do it too," Lila said, her eyes sparkling with pride.
Ethan nodded, his heart full. "I do, and you did it perfectly. You're stronger than I ever imagined," he replied, grateful for their enduring friendship.
As the evening settled in, Ethan and Lila sat side by side, enjoying the comfortable silence that only true friends can share. The day's adventures had not only proven Lila's strength but had also reaffirmed the bond between them, a friendship as warm and enduring as the setting sun.
