Katie Quinn strummed her guitar, her sneakers tapping out the rhythm on the concrete floor. Across from her, Emily Truehart adjusted her keyboard, glancing up with a grin. The girls exchanged a look of satisfaction as they finished the chorus of their latest song.
"Emily, I think we've finally nailed that bridge. The Sugartines are going to rock Norumbega!"
"You bet! If only we had another guitarist, we could really fill out our sound."
A gentle voice interrupts their tune, drawing both girls' attention. They turn to see an anthropomorphic mouse, dressed in a bright purple hoodie and denim skirt, her whiskers twitching with a hopeful smile.
Megan Squeak: An anthro mouse girl, clever and musically gifted, who lives within Katie's house walls.
"Hey Katie, can I join your band?"
"Um... is that a mouse? And she's talking?"
Katie steps forward, her face lighting up with recognition. She gestures for Emily to relax, offering Megan a seat near the amp.
"Emily, this is Megan. Her family lives in our house—and they're harmless, I promise."
"You have a family of talking mice in your house? Like, real mice who wear clothes and play guitar?"
"Trust me, they're cool. Megan's got serious talent."
Megan positions herself confidently, her paws nimble on the fretboard. As she begins to play, the notes swirl through the space, blending seamlessly with the Sugartines' style—energetic yet melodic, with a hint of something magical.
"I built it myself. Want to hear what I've been working on?"
"Absolutely! Show us what you've got, Megan."
"Okay, here goes."
The three musicians play together, their sounds merging in unexpected harmony. Emily’s initial unease melts away, replaced by excitement and admiration.
"Wow, Megan! Your music’s really awesome. We need you in this band."
"Sugartines just got a whole lot sweeter."
Megan strums the last chords, her whiskers trembling with joy. Katie gathers everyone together for a group photo—three best friends, each unique, united by music.
"Let’s make this the best band Norumbega’s ever seen!"
"I’m ready! Let’s write our next song together."
"To the Sugartines—may our music surprise everyone!"
