The kindergarteners wiggle in their seats, excitement buzzing in the air as they clutch their tablets. The classroom smells faintly of crayons and freshly sharpened pencils. Ms. Costa, the teacher, stands at the front with a warm smile, holding up a small, mysterious box wrapped in shiny paper. Her eyes twinkle as she faces her eager students.
"Alright, everyone! Today we're going to play Kahoot, and the winner will get a special surprise prize!" Her words ripple through the room, causing a chorus of delighted whispers and cheerful giggles. The screen at the front flashes with colorful questions, and the children’s fingers dance over their devices.
Manuel, a boy with round glasses and an infectious grin, sits at the edge of his seat. His eyes dart between the screen and his tablet, determined to answer each question as quickly as possible. Around him, classmates like Ava and Samir do their best to keep up, their faces scrunched in focus.
"I hope I win! What do you think the prize is, Manuel?" Ava whispers, her voice tinged with hope. "I don’t know, but I really want to find out!" Manuel murmurs back, tapping in his answer.
Ms. Costa beams as she announces the results. "And the winner is… Manuel! Let’s give him a big round of applause." The room erupts in clapping and cheers, and Manuel grins, cheeks flushed with pride.
"Manuel, come see me after class to collect your prize," Ms. Costa says, her voice gentle and full of mystery. Manuel nods, curiosity flickering in his eyes as he wonders what the surprise could be.
Manuel lingers by his desk, glancing at Ms. Costa, who beckons him over with a kind smile. She pats the chair beside her, inviting him to sit. The room feels calm and almost magical in the late afternoon light.
"You did an amazing job today, Manuel. Are you ready for your surprise?" Ms. Costa asks softly. "Yes, but… what is it?" Manuel replies, his voice a mix of excitement and uncertainty.
Ms. Costa leans closer and whispers, "Listen carefully. Can you hear it?" Manuel presses his ear gently against her belly, his eyes going wide as he hears the gentle gurgle and soft, rhythmic sounds within.
"It sounds funny… but also kind of nice," he says, a shy smile spreading across his face. "It’s the sound of my tummy! Sometimes, surprises are simple but special—just like you," Ms. Costa explains, sharing a warm laugh that makes Manuel feel cherished.
Manuel steps back, still smiling, feeling a new sense of gratitude for the unusual but heartfelt gift. "Thank you, Ms. Costa. That was… actually really cool," he says, hugging his backpack close.
"I’m glad you liked it, Manuel. Remember, sometimes the best surprises are the ones that come from the heart," Ms. Costa replies, her eyes full of kindness. As Manuel heads out the door, he glances back, feeling lighter and happier than ever.
