Maya skipped down the sidewalk, her backpack bouncing and her eyes sparkling with mischief. The market was bustling, with colorful stalls and the scent of fresh bread drifting through the breeze. Sunlight danced on the cobblestones, and the laughter of friends echoed from the nearby playground. Today, Maya felt especially playful, her mind whirling with ideas for a little fun.
Maya tiptoed behind a bush, hiding as she watched Mrs. Patel tend to her flowers. Her eyes twinkled as she picked up a pebble and tossed it near the watering can, causing Mrs. Patel to look around in confusion. The squirrels chattered and scattered as Maya giggled, thinking her harmless trick was very clever.
"That was funny! Maybe I'll surprise Tommy next," she whispered to herself, already plotting her next prank.
Maya waited until her friend Tommy sat on the swing, then tied his shoelaces together while he looked away. When Tommy stood up, he stumbled, and everyone burst into laughter. Maya laughed too, feeling proud of her tricks, even as Tommy looked a little sad.
"Don't be upset, Tommy. It's just a joke!" she called, but Tommy rubbed his knee and walked away quietly.
As Maya passed under an old willow tree, she didn't notice the muddy puddle in her path. Suddenly, a flock of birds darted overhead, startling her. She slipped and fell right into the mud, her clothes splattered and her hands dirty. Nearby, a few children giggled, just as she had earlier.
"Oh no! Now I'm the one with muddy pants," Maya muttered, her cheeks turning red.
Maya thought about the day's events, remembering how Mrs. Patel looked puzzled and how Tommy felt embarrassed. She realized that her little jokes hadn't made anyone happy, except herself. Now that she had fallen in front of everyone, she understood how others must have felt.
"If I don't like it when people laugh at me or make me uncomfortable, maybe I shouldn't do it to them," she whispered softly.
Maya walked up to Tommy and untied his shoelaces, then handed him a shiny red apple as a peace offering.
"I'm sorry for the tricks, Tommy. Let's be friends and play together,"
Tommy grinned and nodded, his face lighting up. Maya then turned to Mrs. Patel, offering to help water the flowers.
"I want to be kind and helpful, not a nuisance," she said brightly.
From that day on, Maya learned to spread smiles through kindness, knowing that what she gave to others would always come back to her—just like an echo.
