Ruby skipped along the sidewalk, her bright red pigtails swinging cheerfully. Her smile was as warm as the sun, and she greeted everyone she passed with a friendly wave.
Ruby noticed Ben sitting alone at lunch, his eyes scanning the bustling cafeteria with indifference. She wanted to approach him, but his sharp glare made her hesitate.
Ruby was engrossed in a jump rope game when Ben strolled by, his gaze fixed on her hair. "Red hair looks like fire," he sneered, causing her to pause mid-jump.
"At least fire is warm. It’s better than being cold all the time," Ruby replied with a soft smile, her words lingering in the air as Ben walked away, arms crossed.
Ruby spotted Ben sitting alone again during lunch. She approached him with quiet determination, her heart filled with kindness. "Why do you say mean things, Ben?" She asked gently.
"Because… people don’t like me anyway. It’s easier to make them stay away," Ben mumbled, eyes still downcast.
"Well, I like you," Ruby said simply, her voice filled with sincerity. Ben looked up, surprise flickering in his eyes. "Why would you like me?" He asked, perplexed.
"Because I think you’re just sad, not mean. And everyone needs a friend," Ruby replied with a grin, her words wrapping around Ben like a warm embrace.
Ruby and Ben became inseparable, their bond growing stronger with each passing day. Ben’s frown gradually faded, replaced by a tentative smile, as he learned that kindness felt far better than bitterness.
Together, the girl with the fiery hair and the boy with the shadowy locks spread warmth and friendship wherever they went, a testament to the power of understanding and acceptance.
