Kalu, a clever male crow with glossy black feathers, hops excitedly around the nest. Today, he and his wife, Kali, have decided to make kichdi together, their favorite dish. The little nest fills with the delicious aroma of roasting grains as they work side by side. Kali hums a cheerful tune while stirring the pot, and Kalu adds a pinch of salt, his eyes glinting with anticipation.
Kali[/@ch_2] as she steps out of the nest, a tiny clay pot balanced on her wing. Below, a sparkling village well awaits amid wildflowers and fluttering butterflies.]
"I'll fetch some fresh water for our kichdi," Kali calls as she glides down, her feathers shining in the sun. Kalu waves a wing, already thinking about the steaming pot left behind. The nest feels warm and inviting, the kichdi’s scent growing stronger.
Kalu tries to resist but finds his beak watering. He circles the pot, looking around to make sure Kali is truly gone. Unable to hold back, he pecks a little—then another bite—until, before he knows it, all the kichdi is gone. He wipes his beak and tries to look innocent, though his belly feels much too full.
Kali[/@ch_2] returns, carrying the filled pot. She perches on the branch outside the nest, surprised to find the door closed.]
"Kalu, open the door! Let me in," she calls, puzzled. Inside, Kalu fumbles, making excuses. "Just a moment! I’m... cleaning up!" His voice is nervous, and Kali frowns, sensing something is amiss.
Kali[/@ch_2] finally steps inside. Shadows stretch across the floor, and the empty clay pot sits in the center, not a grain of kichdi left.]
Kali scans the nest, her eyes narrowing. "Where has all the kichdi gone?" she asks, looking at Kalu, who tries to look innocent. "Maybe a squirrel snuck in?" he suggests, but Kali isn’t fooled.
Kali, determined, leads Kalu to the well. "Let’s take turns swinging on the rope," she proposes with a sly smile. She grips the rope, swings out and back with ease, then steps aside. Kalu, a little nervous, clutches the rope and swings, but his full belly makes him lose his grip—and with a startled squawk, he tumbles into the cold water below.
Kalu[/@ch_1] flaps his wings, struggling. Kali perches above, concern and disappointment in her eyes.]
"Kali, help me! Please, save me!" he cries, his voice echoing off the well walls. "I will help, but first tell me the truth—who ate all the kichdi?" Kalu sputters, finally admitting, "It was me! I’m sorry for lying." With a swift tug, Kali helps him out, shaking her head gently.
"Remember, Kalu, never tell a lie. If you do, you will have to face the consequences," Kali says softly, her voice full of warmth and forgiveness. Kalu nods, promising to always tell the truth from now on. The nest is peaceful once more, and together, they watch the stars twinkle above.
