Liam sat eagerly at the table, his eyes shining as he reached for a small, neatly wrapped box. Grandpa, with silver hair and gentle eyes, smiled and nodded encouragingly.
"Thank you, Grandpa! It's brilliant," Liam exclaimed, strapping on his new digital watch and admiring the glowing numbers.
"Watches are wonderful, Liam. But have you ever wondered how people kept time before clocks and watches existed?"
Grandpa led Liam outside, stopping before the sundial. Shadows stretched across the ancient dial as a gentle breeze rustled the leaves.
"Long ago, people used sundials like this," Grandpa explained, tracing the shadow with his finger. "So the sun was their clock?" Liam asked, eyes wide with wonder.
"Exactly. But sundials had their limits—they could only work when the sun was shining," Grandpa replied, sharing a knowing smile.
Grandpa set up a water clock, watching as droplets fell steadily from one bowl into another. Liam leaned in close, mesmerized by the steady pattern.
"People also measured time with water clocks. Each drop marked a moment passing," Grandpa explained, then carefully lit a candle and marked lines along its length.
"Candle clocks were clever, too. As the wax melted past each line, people knew how much time had gone by," Grandpa added, as Liam imagined distant evenings spent by candlelight.
Grandpa and Liam wandered toward the bell tower, feeling the vibrations of each resonant toll. The air buzzed with excitement as people paused to listen.
"Before everyone had their own clocks, the bell ringers let the whole city know the hour," Grandpa explained, as Liam closed his eyes to soak in the echoing melody.
"It must have felt magical, waiting for the bells to ring," Liam mused, picturing crowds glancing up at the tower.
Grandpa pointed out a grand mechanical clock, its gears turning in perfect harmony. Liam watched in awe as the hands moved steadily, tracing the passage of time.
"Building these clocks took patience and creativity. They worked day and night, rain or shine," Grandpa said, his voice filled with admiration.
"It's amazing how much they invented just to know the time," Liam said, his imagination sparking with every tick.
Liam and Grandpa worked together to make a sundial, marking the hours as shadows grew long outside. The scent of chocolate cake lingered in the air.
"Thank you for sharing these stories, Grandpa. Now I know timekeeping was an adventure, too," Liam said, glancing at his digital watch and the homemade sundial.
"Every time you check the time, remember those who came before us," Grandpa replied, wrapping an arm around Liam as the sun slipped below the horizon.
