Ethan, now twelve, stood at the edge of the schoolyard, watching the chaos of recess unfold. His eyes scanned the crowd until they landed on Lila, the girl he had known since kindergarten, now two years older and seemingly much stronger. Memories of their playful past rushed back, and a mischievous grin spread across his face.
"Time for a little payback," he muttered to himself, his eyes twinkling with a hint of mischief.
As students began to head back to class, Ethan saw his opportunity. He sprinted towards Lila, who was still standing with her friends, and leapt onto her back, expecting the usual tumble of the past.
Lila barely flinched. With surprising ease, she adjusted her stance, securing Ethan's grip. The surrounding students paused, their eyes widening in surprise and amusement.
"Well, this is a surprise," she chuckled, turning her head slightly to look at him. "Want a ride, Ethan?"
Lila effortlessly carried Ethan down the corridor, weaving through clusters of students who parted like the Red Sea, their laughter and whispers following the duo. Ethan was both impressed and perplexed by her newfound strength.
"How did you get so strong?" he asked, curiosity piquing his voice.
"Soccer practice," Lila replied with a proud smile. "I've been working out a lot."
Lila finally set Ethan down as they entered the classroom, both of them laughing. The teacher gave them a knowing smile, shaking her head slightly as the class settled.
"I guess I owe you one," Ethan admitted, his earlier rivalry replaced with admiration.
"Nah," Lila waved off his comment with a grin. "We're even now. But if you ever need a lift, you know where to find me."
As the final bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, Ethan and Lila walked home together, their playful rivalry transformed into a renewed friendship. The echoes of their laughter lingered in the air, a reminder of the unexpected turns that life often takes.
"Next time, let me try carrying you," Ethan suggested, his tone lighthearted.
"Sure," Lila replied, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "But you might need to hit the gym first."
Ethan laughed, the sound mingling with the gentle rustle of leaves in the evening breeze.
