Ashly, a shy eight-year-old with bright eyes and a penchant for painting, sits alone on a swing, her feet barely skimming the ground. Mia, a confident girl known for her flair for drama, stands nearby with her friends, laughter echoing in the evening air.
"Hey, Ashly, painting any invisible masterpieces today?"
Ashly looks down, her fingers gripping the swing's chains tighter, wishing she could blend into the shadows.
Mia approaches Ashly, a smirk playing on her lips. Her friends watch from a distance, their whispers barely audible over the sound of the wind.
"Why do you always sit alone? Too scared to play with the rest of us?"
Ashly remains silent, her eyes fixed on the ground. She feels the sting of Mia's words but refuses to let them see her cry.
Ashly glances at the piano, its keys slightly worn but inviting. Her curiosity piqued, she rises from the swing and walks over to it, her heart pounding with anticipation.
"I wonder if it still works," she murmurs to herself, lightly pressing a key. The note rings out, clear and melodious in the night.
Ashly plays a hesitant tune, her fingers dancing over the keys. With each note, she gains confidence, losing herself in the music. Her melody is haunting and beautiful, capturing the attention of everyone in the park.
Mia stops in her tracks, surprised by the unexpected talent emerging from the shy girl she once belittled.
Mia walks over to Ashly, her expression shifting from mockery to admiration.
"I... I didn't know you could play like that," she admits, her voice softer, almost apologetic.
Ashly smiles, her fingers still lightly resting on the keys.
"There's a lot you don't know about me," she replies, her voice filled with newfound confidence.
Mia sits next to Ashly on the bench by the piano. The tension between them dissipates, replaced by a tentative understanding.
"Maybe you could teach me sometime?" Mia suggests, a hint of hope in her voice.
"I'd like that," Ashly responds, her heart lighter than it had been in days. Together, they watch the stars, the promise of friendship blossoming in the cool night air.
