Ellie was the kind of girl who always had a story in her pocket. Not a real story, like the kind you read in books. But the kind that whispers to you in the wind, or hides behind a tree just before you see it. She lived at the edge of a sleepy town, in a house with creaky floorboards and a backyard full of secrets.
Everyone said the forest was just trees. But Ellie knew better. She had seen the way the wind twirled between the branches. She had heard the hush-hush rustle that sounded almost like a secret being told. And one afternoon, as sunlight pooled like warm honey, she saw it: a shimmer of light between two trees, like a door made of sunlight.
Ellie stepped through the glowing space between the trees. At first it felt like walking through warm rain, droplets soft and golden. The air smelled sweet—like honey and pine needles. The trees were taller here, their leaves whispering secrets to one another. Flowers glowed like little lanterns, and moss sparkled under her feet. Somewhere, far off, a flute was playing a song made of stars.
A sudden *hoot* made Ellie jump. Perched above her on a twisted branch was a large owl, wearing tiny round spectacles and a crooked little satchel.
Whisker, Guardian of the Forest, Collector of Secrets: Large owl, wise, wears spectacles and a satchel.
"About time someone new showed up," fluffing his feathers.
"You’re not afraid, are you?"
Ellie blinked.
"Should I be?"
Whisker's eyes twinkled.
"We’ll see. I’m Whisker, Guardian of this forest and collector of secrets. Follow me, Ellie. The woods have been waiting for you."
They walked through a grove where the trees leaned in close, whispering leaf-lullabies. Ellie spotted something small and round curled up at the base of a tree. It was a little creature with a mossy coat and no hat on its head. It was sniffling.
Pip, Mushroom Sprite: Small, mossy, shy, missing its mushroom cap.
"Hello?" Ellie said gently.
The creature looked up.
"I-I lost my mushroom cap," it whimpered. "Now I’m just... just a stem."
Ellie knelt beside it.
"Don’t worry. I’ll help you find it."
Ellie looked under rocks, behind glowing bushes, and inside a hollow log. Finally, she spotted a flash of red high in the branches of a crooked tree.
"There it is!" she called.
Whisker flew up, snatched the mushroom cap, and swooped down to place it on Pip's head with a *plop*.
The little creature’s face lit up.
"You’re the kindest stem-finder ever!" Pip giggled. And from behind a tree, the forest smiled.
The path grew dimmer as Ellie and Whisker walked deeper into the woods. The light flickered, like candle flames being gently blown. Suddenly, a figure stepped onto the path. It was a fox—but unlike any Ellie had ever seen. Its fur was black as ink, but shimmered like starlight. Its eyes glowed softly, and when it moved, its tail left behind tiny sparkles.
Shadow Fox, Keeper of Riddles: Enigmatic, starlit fur, glowing eyes, mysterious.
"You’ve come far," the fox said, voice smooth like moonlight. "But to go further, you must answer a riddle."
Ellie stood tall.
"Okay. What is it?"
The fox paced in a circle.
"I hide in shadow, but make things clear. I’m there at night, but disappear by day. What am I?"
Ellie thought hard. Then she smiled.
"A dream."
The Shadow Fox paused, then gave a sly grin.
"Well done, Ellie." It bowed low. "You may pass."
