Michael[/@ch_1], tall and quick-witted; William, sturdy and always grinning; Nick, the birthday boy, with a mop of curly hair; and Jean, dirt-smudged and fearless—dart across the hills, leaving trails of laughter.]
Michael leads the charge, legs pumping as he races down a steep hill, grass stains on his jeans. Jean vaults over a fallen log, whooping as William tumbles behind her, mud splattering his shirt. Nick hurls himself into a sparkling blue pool at the hill’s base, making the others shriek and leap after him, water exploding in the golden light.
"Bet you can’t beat my cannonball, slowpokes!"
"Watch this, Jean—it’s the Mega Splash!"
Michael grins and, with a conspiratorial wink at Nick, slips a tiny stink bomb behind a nearby bench. As the sulfurous puff erupts, they break into fits of giggles, clutching their sides while bemused joggers wrinkle their noses.
Nick[/@ch_3]’s backyard, string lights twinkling above a table laden with presents and a massive chocolate cake. Balloons bob in the gentle breeze, and the air is thick with excitement and the smell of frosting.]
Nick paces, peeking at his cake, while William tries to guess what’s inside the biggest present. Jean balances on a fence, scanning the crowd for any signs of trouble.
"Think you’ll get that new skate ramp, Nick?"
"I hope so—anything’s better than last year’s socks."
"If you do, we’re building the world’s biggest jump."
"Just don’t make me land in the neighbor’s roses again!"
Laughter swells as the birthday song begins, everyone clapping along. Suddenly, a commotion erupts near the garden gate.
Michael lunges to save the presents, but slips on a balloon, skidding into the fence. Jean dashes after the goat, arms wide, but the animal swerves, smearing chocolate icing across William’s shirt. Nick, torn between horror and glee, tries to corral the goat with a broom.
"Hey! That was my piece!"
"You look better in chocolate, Will!"
"Somebody grab it before it eats the candles!"
The goat snorts, cake crumbs on its whiskers, and charges, triggering a domino effect of toppled chairs and wild laughter.
Michael squints, nudging Nick to look. Jean drops to a crouch, her eyes narrowed, while William bites his lip, torn between curiosity and fear.
"Did you see that? They’re at Mrs. Jensen’s car."
"Looks like they’re trying to break in."
"We can’t just watch! We have to do something."
"What if they see us?"
"We’ll stick together. Jean and I can circle around. Will, Nick, find an adult and call for help."
The group huddles, adrenaline surging as they split up, stealth and determination in every step.
Jean[/@ch_4] and Michael sneak closer, hearts pounding, while William and Nick dash to the house, breathless and urgent.]
"Mrs. Jensen! There are people in the parking lot—hurry!"
Michael signals with a flashlight, catching the attention of a passing patrol car. A siren wails, and the thieves freeze, caught in the act. The friends regroup as the police thank them, relief and pride shining in their eyes.
"Told you we could handle it."
"I was shaking so bad, I thought I’d drop the phone!"
"You did great, all of you."
"Best birthday ever, even with the goat."
Their laughter rises, stronger than ever.
Jean nudges Nick, grinning.
"Next time, I get to have the crazy animal at my party."
"Only if Michael promises no more stink bombs."
"Deal—if Will agrees to wear the chocolate shirt again."
"Anything for you guys. We make a good team."
They lie side by side, content and proud, ready for whatever adventure tomorrow brings.
