A small cottage sits just beyond the castle walls, its windows glowing warmly against the encroaching dusk. Inside, Joan Flower, a wise woman with silver-streaked hair and gentle eyes, sits at her spinning wheel, humming softly. Her daughters, Margaret and Phillipa, help her sort dried herbs, their laughter mingling with the song of the evening birds.
Margaret glances nervously at her mother. "Mother, the villagers are speaking ill of us again. They say we know too much about healing—and curses."
Joan Flower brushes her daughter’s cheek with a steady hand. "We have only ever used our knowledge to help, Margaret. But fear can turn kindness to suspicion in an instant."
Sir Edward, a stern-faced steward, steps forward. "Joan Flower, Margaret, Phillipa—you stand accused of witchcraft! The gloves of the Earl’s sons were found in your possession, and the family’s hair, too! Explain yourselves."
Phillipa trembles as she clings to her sister. "We meant no harm! The gloves were brought to mend, the hair for a healing charm!"
Joan Flower stands tall despite her shaking hands. "We are healers, not witches. We use nature’s gifts to cure and to comfort. Please, judge us by our deeds, not by fear."
Margaret steps forward, voice quivering but strong. "If kindness is a crime, then call us guilty. But our hearts hold only hope for the sick, not curses for the healthy."
Sir Edward glances at the frightened faces of the villagers. "Fear is a powerful force, and stories grow in the telling. But we must remember, justice must be guided by truth, not rumor."
The magistrate looks at the Flower women with a heavy heart, knowing that no evidence can truly erase the shadow of suspicion once it has taken root.
A little girl asks her grandmother, Old Nan, about the tale. "Were Joan and her daughters really witches, or just misunderstood?"
Old Nan smiles and smooths the child’s hair. "Sometimes, my dear, those who are different are feared most of all. But kindness, courage, and truth shine brighter than any rumor or curse—and that is the real magic of Belvoir Castle."
