The room is always quiet, except for the rhythmic beeping of the machine next to my bed. I watch the sunlight dance across the ceiling, casting shapes that remind me of the park. Sometimes, I imagine I'm there, running through the grass, instead of being surrounded by these white walls. But there's magic here too, in the little things. Like the butterfly sticker on the wall that Mom put up for me. "It's a reminder that beauty can be found anywhere," she said.
I can hear laughter from the hallway. It makes me smile. Laughter is like music, and I make up stories about the people it belongs to. Maybe they're going to a party, or maybe they're celebrating something special. Nurse Ellie often stops by with stories of her own. "Today, I saw the most beautiful sunset," she tells me, and I can almost see it too, the sky painted with colors I can't quite name.
In my dreams, I'm in the park again. The sun is warm on my skin, and I can hear the laughter of my friends as they run around. There's a big oak tree where we always meet, its branches stretching wide like welcoming arms. I see Tommy, my best friend, waving at me from the swings. "Come on, Bobby! Let's race to the slide!" he shouts, and I laugh, feeling the wind rush past as I run beside him.
Nighttime is when the room feels the loneliest, but Mom always sits with me until I fall asleep. She hums my favorite lullaby, her voice a soothing balm. I hold her hand, feeling the warmth and strength in her fingers. "You'll play in the park again, Bobby," she whispers, and I believe her, because Moms don't lie.
Morning light brings hope. Each day is a new chance to dream, to imagine, to find magic in the little things. Nurse Ellie brings me a new book today, filled with adventures and far-off lands. "Let's go on a journey," she smiles, and I get lost in the pages, traveling to places where anything is possible.
Though I can't leave this room, my mind can go anywhere. I hold onto the dreams of the park, the laughter, and the stories. They are my escape, my comfort, my wings. And I know that one day, I'll run in the sun again, with the wind in my hair and freedom in my heart.
