Jay shuffled along with her teachers, her small hands gripping the straps of her backpack. Her eyes darted towards her classmates, who laughed and skipped ahead. She felt a pang of guilt, remembering the mishap on the bus. Mia, her friend, had been surprised and slightly hurt, but the presence of Mia's mom had prevented a bigger ordeal.
Jay glanced at Mia, who was a few steps ahead, her hat now resting securely on her head. Jay_d]"I didn't mean to,"[/@ch_1_d] she muttered to herself, her voice lost in the chatter of the group. Her teachers, oblivious to her internal turmoil, led them towards the animal enclosures with practiced ease.
Jay couldn't help but laugh at a monkey that seemed to be mimicking the children, sticking its tongue out and performing little flips. Mr. Thompson, one of the teachers, noticed her smile and leaned in. "They always know how to cheer us up, don't they?" he said warmly.
Jay found herself standing next to Mia. She hesitated for a moment before speaking. "I'm sorry about earlier, Mia," she said quietly, her eyes fixed on the flamingos. Mia turned towards her, her expression softening. "It's okay, Jay. I know it was an accident," she replied, offering a reassuring smile.
Jay felt a weight lift off her shoulders. Mrs. Lee, another teacher, gathered the group for a headcount. "Did everyone have fun today?" she called out, receiving a chorus of enthusiastic yeses. Jay nodded along, her heart lighter.
Jay settled into her seat, this time careful with her belongings. "Next time, I'll be more careful," she promised herself, glancing at Mia who was already deep in conversation with another friend. The bus rolled out of the zoo, carrying with it the memories of a day well spent.
