He grabs his favorite shoes, feeling the soft laces and the springy soles beneath his fingers. "I can do this. I’ve practiced so hard," he whispers, determination shining in his eyes.
Trenton lines up with other kids, his heart thumping like a drum. Coaches blow whistles, and the crowd’s energy buzzes in the air. He takes a deep breath, feeling the cool wind brush his cheeks. "Ready… set… go!" calls the coach, and the runners spring forward.
Trenton pushes himself, remembering all the late mornings and late afternoons he spent training. His lungs fill with fresh air, and his arms swing in rhythm. The finish line seems far away, but he keeps his eyes on it, focused and brave.
