Trixy sniffed the air, her little ears perked up as she watched the sun dip below the horizon. The backyard, usually her kingdom, felt different tonight. It was the first evening with her new sister, and Trixy felt her territory was no longer her own.
Lucille stretched lazily, her sleek black fur glistening under the kitchen lights. Trixy eyed her from the doorway, unsure of this new presence. "Why do you have to be here?" Trixy barked, though her voice was more a whimper than a command.
"I just want to be friends," Lucille replied softly, her tail wagging a slow, hopeful rhythm.
Trixy sulked in her favorite corner, watching as Lucille was doted on by their owner. The rain mirrored her tears of frustration. "Why does everyone like her so much?" she wondered, her heart heavy with jealousy.
Trixy watched from the doorway, her heart unexpectedly aching. As Lucille turned back to give one last wag of her tail, Trixy felt a pang of regret. "I didn't even say goodbye," she murmured to herself.
Trixy wandered the garden, her heart heavy with the realization of what she had lost. "I miss her," she whispered to the evening breeze, longing for the companionship she had once rejected.
Trixy curled up in her bed, the night air cool and soothing. "Maybe one day, I'll have another chance," she thought, her heart now open to the possibility of friendship and love once more.
