Lila and Lucas, ten-year-old twins with matching freckles but very different smiles, step onto the path holding hands. Their mother waves from a nearby bench, a novel in her lap, keeping a watchful eye as they run ahead.
"Lucas, let’s race to the big slide!"
"You’re on, but this time I’m not letting you win!"
Lila sprints ahead, her ponytail flying behind her, while Lucas chases with determined strides. They weave through a group of toddlers, narrowly dodging a bouncing ball.
"First one up gets to pick our next game!"
"I hope you like tag, because you’re it!"
Lucas covers his eyes and begins to count loudly, while Lila giggles and scurries off, searching for the perfect hiding spot.
"…Seven, eight, nine… Ready or not, here I come!"
Lila crouches low behind a cluster of tall grasses, watching her brother search. She spots the kite, curiosity lighting her eyes.
"Maybe we can fix that kite after this," she whispers to herself, careful not to be found.
Lucas finds Lila and the tangled kite. They both kneel, working together to untangle the string, hands dirty but faces bright with excitement.
"Let’s see if we can get it to fly,"
"Together—like always,"
With the kite dancing above their heads, Lila and Lucas run across the grass, laughter echoing in the evening air. Their mother gathers them into a hug, the three of them silhouetted against the fading light.
"Best park day ever,"
"Let’s come back tomorrow and fly even higher,"
