Penny sat cross-legged on her bed, hugging her favorite teddy bear tightly. Her mind wandered to her friends' families, picturing them enjoying breakfast together. "Why doesn't Dad live with us anymore?" she wondered silently, her heart heavy with unasked questions.
Penny's Mom glanced over her shoulder with a warm smile. "Morning, sweetheart. Ready for some pancakes?" Penny nodded, sliding into her seat at the table. She watched her mom move with ease, yet a part of her wished for her dad's laughter to fill the room too.
Penny stood on the sidelines, watching her friends play. She noticed Emma, her best friend, running towards her with a wide grin. "Let's go play, Penny!" Emma urged. Penny joined in, but her mind drifted to the families she saw at pickup time, each with both parents smiling and waving.
Penny took a deep breath, her small voice breaking the silence. "Mom, why don't we live with Dad anymore?" Her mom paused, setting the book aside, and turned to face her daughter. "It's complicated, sweetie, but we both love you very much," she explained gently, stroking Penny's hair.
Penny's Mom tucked her into bed, kissing her forehead. "Remember, no matter what, you are loved," she whispered. Penny nodded, feeling a bit more at ease. She clutched her teddy bear, imagining her dad tucking her in too and feeling grateful for their love, even if it came from two different homes.
Penny smiled as she spotted her dad approaching, his familiar gait filling her with comfort. He wrapped her in a big hug, and she felt whole again. "I like our time together, Daddy," she admitted, realizing that happiness could look different for everyone, but it was just as precious.
