Vanessa holds Pancake’s harness, her posture tall and assured, her steps even. She listens to the subtle sounds around them—the rustling leaves, the chirping birds, the rhythmic click of her cane against the pavement.
"Pancake, I think it's too nice a morning to rush. Let's take the long way through the park," she says, a smile lifting her lips. Pancake’s ears perk, his tail wagging, ready for whatever the day might bring.
Vanessa pauses, tilting her head to catch the sound more clearly. Pancake freezes beside her, his nose twitching as he listens intently.
"Did you hear that, Pancake? Sounds like someone small is in trouble," she murmurs. Letting Pancake guide her, they move toward the source, the squeaks growing louder and more frantic.
Vanessa crouches, her hand extended slowly. Pancake sits beside her, his head cocked, nose working overtime as he sniffs the air around the frightened creature.
"Hey there, little one. You’re not alone now," she whispers gently, her voice soothing. She strokes the air until she finds the trembling body, giving it a reassuring touch while Pancake keeps a protective watch.
Vanessa sits cross-legged on the grass, humming softly to the baby squirrel, whose cries have quieted to tiny hiccups. Pancake disappears into the undergrowth, his movements determined.
"Don’t worry," she assures the baby squirrel. "If anyone can find your family, it’s Pancake. He’s got a nose for these things... and a resume that’s almost as long as his tail." A few children stop to watch, whispering about the famous guide dog and the red-haired girl.
Pancake leads the squirrel family back toward the bench, his movements gentle so as not to frighten them. The mother’s tail flicks anxiously, but she chirps with recognition as she spots her lost baby.
"Pancake, you did it! They’re here!" Vanessa laughs, her relief palpable. She gently releases the baby, who scrambles joyfully to its family, the reunion a flurry of whiskers and happy squeaks.
"Well, Pancake, another crisis averted. Do you think they’ll tell the others about the legendary guide dog who moonlights as a squirrel detective?" Vanessa teases, ruffling Pancake’s ears.
Pancake gives a soft woof, as if to answer, and together they continue down the sunlit path—ready for whatever small adventures tomorrow might bring.
