Lila, an eight-year-old with a cascade of dark curls, sat cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by a fortress of picture books. Her brow furrowed in concentration, she traced her finger over the words, her lips moving silently. Beside her, Waffles, a fluffy golden retriever, lay sprawled with his head resting on one of the books, his tail thumping gently against the floor.
Lila sighed deeply and looked at Waffles. "Why is this so hard, Waffles?" she whispered. Waffles lifted his head, his big brown eyes meeting hers with an expression that seemed to say, "Don't give up."
Waffles nudged the book with his nose, pushing it closer to Lila. Lila giggled, taking the hint. "Alright, let's try this one," she said, opening the book to the first page. The images of a whimsical forest filled with talking animals seemed to beckon her into their world.
Lila read slowly, her voice gaining strength with each sentence. "The... fox... said... hello... to... the... rabbit," she pronounced carefully. Waffles wagged his tail enthusiastically, as if to celebrate her small victory. Lila grinned and patted his head, "Thanks for listening, Waffles," she said.
Lila turned another page, her excitement growing as she realized she was truly reading the story. "I can do this, Waffles!" she exclaimed. Waffles nestled closer, his fur warm and comforting against her side. Together, they continued their journey through the magical forest, each new word a step toward a newfound confidence.
Lila closed the book with a satisfying thud and wrapped her arms around Waffles. "We did it, Waffles. We really did it," she murmured, burying her face in his soft fur. Waffles let out a contented sigh, his tail curling around her, as if to say that this was only the beginning of their many adventures together.
