Lila, an adventurous girl with unruly curls and keen hazel eyes, waves eagerly at her best friend.
Max, a thoughtful boy with glasses and a mischievous grin, adjusts his cap as he jogs over.
"Ready for another adventure, Max?"
"Always, especially if we find what we’re looking for today," he replies, a conspiratorial twinkle in his eye.
As Lila gently pulls back the vines, her breath catches—nestled among the roots are two baby dragons, scales glinting in hues of sapphire and emerald.
The dragons blink up at them with curious, intelligent eyes. One lets out a soft, musical trill.
"Lila, are those... dragons?"
"I think they are, Max. Oh wow, they're beautiful!"
Lila extends her hand, and the bolder dragon nuzzles her palm, wings fluttering like silk ribbons.
Max laughs as the shyer dragon inches closer, nosing at his knee before curling up beside him.
"I think they trust us," she whispers, her eyes shining.
"Maybe we can be their friends... their best friends," he says, grinning as the dragon nuzzles him again.
Lila traces the dragon’s scales, feeling the warmth of its trust.
Max leans in, voice hushed.
"We have to keep them safe, Lila. No one can know until they're ready,"
"Promise. We'll protect them, no matter what,"
Branches whip past as Lila shouts their names, fear prickling her skin. Max clutches a flashlight, scanning the shadows for a glimpse of scales.
Finally, the dragons appear, huddled beneath a fallen log, eyes wide with fear.
"We're here! We'll never leave you," Lila calls out, kneeling beside them.
"Hold on to us—we’ll get through this storm together,"
Lila and Max stand hand in hand, faces lifted to the sky as their dragons swoop and soar, sunlight flashing off their scales.
"We really are best friends. Nothing can ever change that,"
"Now we have the whole sky to explore—together,"
As the dragons dip low, the children reach out, laughter echoing across the meadow, their friendship forever lifted on the wings of dragons.
