Hazel, a brave little squirrel with a bushy copper tail and bright black eyes, peeks out, clutching a single acorn. Her heart beats fast with excitement for her first winter alone.
"I have to make sure I have enough food for the cold days ahead," she whispers, glancing at her small stash.
Hazel works tirelessly, her pile of food growing bigger each day. She hums a tune as she fills her burrow, proud of her hard work and resourcefulness.
"I’ll be safe and warm, no matter how cold it gets," she says, arranging her treasures carefully.
Maple, a gentle older squirrel, and Sprig, her playful son, look up hopefully at Hazel.
"Is there anything left out here? We’ve searched all morning," Maple asks, her voice trembling.
Hazel thinks about the warmth and comfort of her burrow, and the loneliness that comes with it.
"I do have some food... but what if I run out? What should I do?" she wonders aloud.
"Thank you, Hazel! You’re so generous," Sprig exclaims, his eyes shining.
"Sharing makes the cold easier to bear," Maple adds, her voice full of gratitude and relief.
Hazel realizes that her bravery is not just in facing the winter alone, but in opening her heart to others.
"I understand now—sharing makes us richer, not poorer," Hazel smiles, her spirit lighter and her world brighter.
